Resetting The Game When Done (Factory Reset) [SPOILERS]

Warning! ISS Vanguard is a campaign game that takes weeks to complete. It will take you at least 50 or 60 hours to complete the campaign, but if you are playing thoroughly (rather than quickly) the full campaign will take well over 100 hours (even 200 hours). This article is NOT about how to put the game away between sessions as you are continuing the campaign! This article explains how to do a “Factory Reset” of the game so it is ready for you to start a brand new fresh game from ground zero… or to give to a friend to play!

Yes … you CAN play the game over again once you are done! And you can make different choices as you play to get a whole new game experience!

Here are some tips for repacking everything so that it is ready for you to begin a new campaign (or to pass it along to a friend to play).

TUTORIAL DECKS

Set up the two decks as specified in Log 720:

Tutorial Deck A (34 standard size cards) – start by placing the bottom card on the table, then place the other cards (in order) on top of it like this:

  • No More Cards (the bottom card)
  • R01 – Research Project (Alien Materials)
  • G01 – Global Condition card
  • M03 – Mission card
  • M02 – Mission card
  • 11 Point of Interest cards:
    • P000
    • P000
    • P000
    • P109
    • P108
    • P107
    • P106
    • P105
    • P103
    • P102
    • P101
  • M01 – Mission card
  • 12 Section cards (3 from each of the 4 Sections)
    • These Section cards have no “rank” icon after the Section icon
  • 4 Crewmember cards:

    • Cho Jae-Yong
  • This Side Up (top card)

They will look like this if splayed out:

Tutorial Deck B (13 small cards) – start by placing the bottom card on the table, then place the other cards (in order) on top of it like this:

  • No More Cards (bottom card)
  • 5 Event cards (with the circle T icon on them)
  • 4 Injury cards (Just a Scratch)
  • Unique Discovery 1
  • Rank Up card (tutorial)
  • This Side Up (top card)

They will look like this if splayed out:

SECRET ENVELOPE:

Place these in the envelope and seal it:

  • The Embassy District and War Room pages
  • Page 41 card holder
  • The 40 Advanced Event cards
  • The Planet Cards and Planet Cards Divider
  • The Universal and Expert Dice (2 of each for each color … total 12 dice):

Section Boxes

Fill the four Section Boxes to conserve space in the game box as follows:

  • Yellow Section Box (Engineering)
    • In the larger section of the box:
      • Engineering Rank Sleeves divider card
      • 9 Engineering Rank Sleeves
      • Engineering Section Cards divider card
      • 14 Rank 1 Engineering Section cards
      • 10 Rank 2 Engineering Section cards
      • 6 Rank 3 Engineering Section cards
    • Store Dice In the thinner section of the box (will be removed when setting up the game):
      • 12 yellow Injury dice
      • 2 orange Danger dice
      • Black D10 die
      • Black D4 die
    • Place the clear cover on top (with the hexagon Engineering icon)
  • Purple Section Box (Science)
    • In the larger section of the box:
      • Science Rank Sleeves divider card
      • 9 Science Rank Sleeves
      • Science Section Cards divider card

Place all the cards into the white Card Tray A as specified on page 6 of the rulebook. Make sure the Tutorial deck cards are NOT included here!

  • Standard Size cards:
    • Point of Interest divider card
      • 249 Point of Interest (POI) cards (P000-P533 in number order)
    • Missions divider card
      • 57 Mission cards (M10-M210 in number order)
    • Global Conditions divider card
      • 42 Global Condition cards (G02-G36 in number order)
  • Small cards:
    • Injuries divider card
      • 48 Injury cards (alpha order)
    • Rank Ups divider card
      • 19 Rank Up cards (shuffled)
    • Events divider card
      • 40 Events (shuffled) (make sure no Advanced Events are in the deck)
    • Unique Discoveries divider card
      • 39 Unique Discovery cards (number order)
    • Discoveries divider card
      • 65 Discovery cards (grouped by 5 types, 13 of each type shuffled)

Cover it with the Tray A plastic cover.

It should look like this (note that the picture in the rulebook shows the small cards oriented incorrectly)

Black Card Tray B

Place all the cards into the black Card Tray B as specified on page 7 of the rulebook. Make sure the Tutorial deck cards are NOT included here.

  • Square cards:

      • 101 Equipment cards (E01-E105 in number order)
  • Standard size cards:
    • Resting Crew divider card
    • Recruits divider card

Note: You can place the two Tutorial decks in the back of black Card Tray B (the section that during game play is for the cards removed from the game).

Middle Black Tray

The Large cards go on the side:

  • 6 Lander cards (alpha order)
  • 23 Threat cards (alpha order)
  • 4 Game Round and Dice Check Reference cards
  • 1 Danger Die Reference card
  • 1 Deadly Space Reference card
  • Plus the Planetary Scanner

In the two open sections place these components:

  • 20 Lead tokens in the black bag
  • 16 Success tokens
  • 8 Time tokens
  • 8 Energy tokens
  • 6 Command tokens
  • 4 Turn tokens
  • 23 Mission Equipment tokens
  • 1 Start token
